Richard Reed was a native of England, having come to America and settled in
Hunterdon County in township of East Amwell, on a farm. He made his will
October 3, 1773, as follows:
Richard Reed, of Amwell, Hunterdon County, N. J., to wife Mary one half of my
lands, except that plantation I bought of Noah Hixson and after her death to my
son John Reed. After five years the place is to be sold and the money paid to
my daughter Jemima, the wife of Noah Hixson, and Mary Peniah and Zelpha, son
John, the rest of my estate. Executors, wife Mary and my son John.

1803, in Old Jersey, Baptist Church, Somerset Co, PA. Census: 1783, in Bedford
Co, Pennsylvania. Military: 1775, in New Jersey, Revolutionary, War.
John Reed was named as one of the early pioneers in Somerset County,
Pennsylvania. His name is on the list of Taxables of Turkeyfoot Township for
1774. He was born and lived his early life in New Jersey where he married
Thankful Honowell. A group of people moved in 1770 from Essex and Morris
counties, New Jersey, to what became Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, Pa.
This was known as the "Jersey Settlement" and a group of these people formed
the Turkeyfoot Baptist Church, which was more generally known as the Old Jersey
Baptist Church. In early days, members often carried rifles to church and
posted a guard for fear of Indian attack, though history does not record any
account of an Indian attack on a congregation or destruction of a church in
Somerset County. John Reed's name does not appear in the church records, but
his land is on the map of original warrants with many of the church members,
and he is buried in the cemetery of the Old Jersey Baptist Church. John Reed
was a member of the New Jersey Continental Line in the Revolution.
John Reed of New Jersey was a Sergeant 3d New Jersey, 24th November, 1775, to
November,1776. He was an Ensign 3d New Jersey, 1st February 1777 and served in
the Indian Campaign against the Six Nations in western Pennsylvania. He then
became a 2d Lieutenant, 3d October, 1777, a 1st Lieutenant, 1st February, 1779.
He then transferred to 1st New Jersey, 1st January, 1781 and detailed to New
Jersey Light Infantry Battalion, which was part of General LaFayette's
Division. The unit served in the Virginia campaign from April to October 1781,
and took part in the siege and battle of Yorktown, Virginia, and was present at
the surrender of Lord Corwallis, October 19, 1781. He was discharged in April,
1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War.
