Buckman Family

                                         FIRST GENERATION

1. Edward Buckman. Born, circa 1623, in Billingshurst, Sussex Co, England.
Died, 13 Jul 1670, in Chiltington, England.

                       The Buckman Family

The original home of the Bucks County Buckman family was the parish of
Billingshurst, Sussex, the registers of which were examined for me in 1961 by
the Vicar, the Rev. R. Evans Hopkins. A number of entries were found which
could not be placed in the family, although they are undoubtedly of members of
the same family. These were as follows:

Dec 1584 Thomas Buckman m. (indecipherable)
28 May 1638 William Buckman m. Elizabeth (indecipherable)
16 Oct 1639 Richard Greenfield m. Elizabeth Buckman
2 Feb 1641/2 Susan Buckman, daughter of (indecipherable)

The Thomas who married in 1584 was probably the great-grandfather of the
immigrant William Buckman. The William who married in 1638 was probably an
uncle of the immigrant. Whether the Elizabeth who married William Buckman in
1638 was the same person who married Richard Greenfield in 1639 is unknown, but
the Susan who was baptized in 1642 may well have been the Susan Buckman
recorded in Quaker records as buried at Ninnyhurst in 2nd mo. 1668.

No success has been had in locating any English probate records of this family.

Edward Buckman, the first of this line of whom we can be sure, was married in
the Parish of Billingshurst, Sussex, 3 Oct. 1648, to a woman of whom the first
name was certainly Joan and whose last name was read by the Vicar as possibly
Bagham. Besides the entries cited above, there were also births of two sons of
Edward and Joan, and of one granddaughter, but after that the name Buckman does
not appear in the Billingshurst registers until the last half of the nineteenth
century. Either the Buckmans all became Quakers or moved away or died out in
Billingshurst.

Some, if not all, of the Buckmans of Billingshurst did become Friends,
including Edward and Joan who had recorded in the records of the Quarterly
Meeting of Sussex and Surrey, as of Shipley Meeting, the births of three
daughters named Mary, Ruth and Sarah, but as yet we have no birth record for
William Buckman in either Anglican or Quaker records.

He was, however associated with his brothers Edward and Thomas and his sister
Ruth so closely that it is certain that he also was a son of Edward and Joan.
It is quite possible that he was baptized by Anglican rite in a neighboring
parish.

According to Quaker records Edward Buckman died on 13 5th mo. 1670 and was
buried at Chiltington on the 15th of the same month. His widow did not remarry
but in 1682 she embarked with her son William and his family, sons Edward and
Thomas and her daughter Ruth, on the Welcome to come to Pennsylvania, but as
neither the widow nor Edward and Thomas have ever been found alive in any
American record, it is presumed that all three died of the smallpox on the way.

In the account book already cited was this: "William Buckman the elder came
into Pennsylvania in the year of our Lord 1682 the 25th of the 6th month." This
has been thought by some to negate the Welcome claim, since the ship did not
arrive until late October, but the date here recorded is probably either that
on which the Buckmans left Billingshurst for some coastal port, or, more
probably that on which they were about to embark.

The account book, already mentioned, contained the following:

An account of the widow Buckman's goods put up for Pennsylvania the 29th of the
5th mo. 1682:

In the least chest 2 pais of Sheets, and two pairs of pillow coats; weaving
linen, weighed 78 lbs; marked B.
   In the bigest chest 3 pairs of Sheets, 3 Small clothes, one bolster tick;
other linen clothes, weighed 138 lbs.
In an old meal trough, 4 suits of clothese and other old things, weighed
175.
In a powdering tub, woolen yard weighed 33.
In an old sack, 2 Blanketts, a tongs, a yard of Curtain, 3 hand wipers,
hops, weighed 69.
The bounate (bonnet?) hat capes and --- weighed 32 lbs. One bed and blankets
and pillows and a pair of sheets, weighed 85 lbs.
Two bolsters, a pair of Sheets, 2 blankets, 2 coverlets weighed 70 lbs.

Below this the total weight was computed (with digits running the other way of
the page): 78, 138, 175, 33, 69, 90, 32, 85, 70 = 770 + 29, 54 = 843 (really
853), and then, "Widow Buckmans goods weighed 843 lbs"

An account of Edward Buckmans good put up for Pennsylvania ye 20th of 5th mo
1682 and Thomas Buckmans.

In the bigest chest, 3 suits of clothes, 14 shifts, 5 pairs of shoes, 3
pairs of stockings, marked EB (i.e. the chest, not the stockings).
In the Old Iron chest, 3 spitters, 2 mattocks, 2 Sledges, 2 hoes, and
chisels, and augers and axes, and a hand saw, fire pan, tongs, and cleaver;
weighed by gross 300. One iron bar weighed 27 lbs.

Thomas Buckmans goods, iii boiling tubs, Brass Kettle, 24 pewter dishes; Some
porringers and other things, weighed 132 lbs, marked B. Two hand Saws and one
cross Curf (cut, of course) Saw.

The addition, running as before the other way of the page, was: Ed. B. 223, 38,
26, 27, 140 = 554 (sic); Thos. B. 160, 132, 60 = 352, and "Edward Buckmans
goods weighed 374 (sic) and Thomas Buckmans 353." The discrepancy in the totals
of Edward Buckman's weights may be due to carelessness in copying. Then
follows:

An account of William Buckman's goods, put up for Pennsylvania ye 24th of
(remainder of date illegible, which is surprising, for it could only have been
"5th mo. 1682").

In the bigest chest, 9 sheets, 12 napkins, 3 Table Cloths, Some shifts and
old Linen weighed 132 lbs marked WB.
In the least chest 3 suits of clothes and Old things weighed 72.
In ye old cou(n)ting box, 5 blankets, one rug, 2 candlesticks, one flagon
and other odd things weighed 170 lbs.
2 Iron Pots weighed 35 lbs.
2 Spits, 4 crane rods, and a powderer weighed 20 lbs in a box, some linen
goods weighed 37 lbs.
In a firkin, Old things weighed 21, Old Sacks weighed 23 lbs, Some old
firkins, weighed 36 lbs.
   2 Beds, 4 Bolsters, 3 pillows, 2 sheets, 2 Blankets, weighed 289 lbs, Frying
pans weighed 11 lbs, 2 Crane Irons, weighed 85 lbs.
In the longest box of William Buckmans goods some tools and axes, and pot
hooks weighed 253 lbs.

Of Edward Buckmans goods, one gun and a chain, six Iron Wedges, weighed in all
60 lbs.

Of the widow Buckmans goods one posnet and leaden weights in all 348, one iron
pot, one Kettle, a Brass sickle, one Basket, one cross curf (cut) saw, one pair
of belts, one bag of nails, one box marked WB, one Sack, 2 lbs shot, 5 lbs
powder.

Ruth Buckmans box -- Some linen clothes, weighed 54 lbs.

The total, as before running the other way of the page, was Will B.: 132, 72,
170, 35, 37, 21, 23, 36, 289, 21, 85, 253 = 1064 (sic) + 7 = 1071 (sic), and
"William Buckmans good weighed 1071 lbs."

The historical value of this series of memoranda is immense, for it does much
to illuminate us on the kind of possessions persons migrating from England to
Pennsylvania in the 17th century brought with them. These goods were not
intended for sale since they were not entered in the London Port Book, but
there are some items in the inventory which do cause wonder.

Since Edward and Joan (Bagham) Buckman had children named Edward, Thomas and
Ruth, as well as the daughters Mary and Sarah not named here, it becomes
certain that William Buckman was also their son, especially since the evidence
of the warrant shows that he was a brother of Edward and Thomas.

He married Joan Bagham, 3 Oct 1648, in Billingshurst, Sussex Co, England.
Born, circa 1625, in Billingshurst, Sussex Co, England. Died, circa 1682, in
Ship Welcome, at sea. Children:

   2 i. William Sr.
ii. Edward Jr. Born, circa 1651. Died, circa 1682, in Ship Welcome,
               at sea.
iii. Thomas. Born, circa 1654. Died, circa 1682, in Ship Welcome, at
               sea.
iv. Mary. Born, 7 Sep 1656, in England.
   3 v. Ruth.
vi. Sarah. Born, 16 Nov 1669, in Sussex, England. Died, 4 Oct 1670,
               in Sussex, England.

                                SECOND GENERATION

2. William Buckman Sr. Born, circa 1650, in Nr Billingshurst, Sussex Co,
England. Died, 9 Oct 1716, in Newtown, Bucks Co, Pennsylvania.

William Buckman, the immigrant, was born, probably at or near Billingshurst,
Sussex, about the year 1650, son, probably the eldest, of Edward and Joan
(Bagham) Buckman. Though no record of his birth or baptism has been found, he
is associated with the other children of his parents in the baggage memoranda
already quoted, and he inherited the land rights of his brothers Edward and
Thomas when they died without issue. There can be no doubt of his position in
this family. He came to America on the Welcome with his first wife Sarah, whose
maiden name has not been discovered, their daughters Sarah and Mary, his two
brothers Edward and Thomas, his sister Ruth, and their widowed mother, Joan
Buckman. There is a possibility that his eldest child Thomas started the voyage
with the others but died of the smallpox en route.

General W. W. H. Davis, author of the History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania,
appears to have seen the baggage memoranda cited above but believed that the
first name of the widow was Ruth, rather than Joan. He believed that the
Buckmans of the baggage memoranda, who did not in his view include our William
but another of the same name, spent their first winter in a cave south of
Fallsington. In the Strawn family, who descend, of course, from the Buckmans,
there was a strong tradition that their ancestors, supposed usually to have
been Strawns, lived out the first winter in a cave on the bank of the Delaware.
It is certain that many early Pennsylvanians did live for a time in such
places, so this may represent a genuine tradition.

The Middletown Monthly Meeting minutes show 2 8th mo. 1690 the names of
contributors to the meeting house fund and among them we find Willm Buckman
with 0-05-01. He was appointed one of several to lay out a road from Newtown to
the ferry on the second Wednesday in December 1693, reappointed 10 June 1696,
on which day the work was reported done. Similarly, on 5 Oct. 1697, he was
appointed to lay out a road from Wrightstown to Neshamineh Meeting House, and
he was a juror in 1684, on the grand jury in 1688, 1689, 1691 and 1698, a
witness on 14 April 1698.

Bucks Deeds 2:142, dated 7 Sept. 1697, recorded 14 April 1697, show that
William Buckman of Newtown, yeoman, sold to John Shaw of the same, yeoman, for
L24, land which had been granted to William Buckman by the Proprietor, 13 Sept.
1686. Bucks Deeds 2:143, dated 7 May 7 William and Mary 1695, recorded 11 Oct.
1697, show that William Buckman of Bucks, husbandman, bought for L30 from
Robert Webb of the Town and county of Philadelphia, gent., and Elizabeth his
wife, who had been the widow of John Barber (a Welcome passenger, as were
Elizabeth and her father John Songhurst). Bucks Deed 3:242, dated 12 March
1704/5, recorded 3 Dec. 1705, show that John Rowland and wife Priscilla of
Bristol (Township and they were both Welcome passengers also), he a yeoman, she
formerly Priscilla Shepperd (and as such a First Purchaser), sold to William
Buckman land which Priscilla had bought from William Penn, 19 Aug. 1681, before
her marriage to John Rowland. Bucks Deeds 4:34, dated 7 Dec. 11 Anne 1708,
acknowledged same date, show that Henry Cooper (a son-in-law of William
Buckman) of Newtown, blacksmith, signed by mark a deed to William Buckman,
consideration L90. We should also add the patent to William Buckman mentioned
above in the preceding sketch whereby he was granted a city lot in the right of
his two deceased brothers. These are all the deeds of William Buckman found in
either Bucks or Philadlephia counties.

In Thomas Holme's "Mapp of ye Improved Part of Pensilvania," undated but in the
mid-1680's, the name Buckman appears on a rectangular plot, with the southeast
corner cut off, which lies in the second tier of properties from the
Bucks-Philadelphia line two or three miles west of Neshamineh Creek, and
approximately where the U of Bucks appears on the map. On a "Map of Newtown
1703," William Buckman is shown as owner of a country lot of 668 acres, a Town
lot of 59 acres, total 727 acres, on the west side of Newtown, precisely where,
on Holme's map, appears the name Elizabeth Barber, i.e. this was the property
purchased in 1695 from the Webbs, orginally granted to John Barber who did not
survive to enjoy it.

The first wife Sarah died 10 5th mo. 1690, probably as the result of childbed,
and William Buckman waited sixteen years before he married again. His first
intentions to marry Elizabeth Wilson were made at Middletown, 1 6th mo. 1706,
second intentions 5 7th mo. 1706, but of her ancestry we know nothing. W. H. J.
asked in Pennsylvania Magazine of History & Biography 8:441 who this Elizabeth
Wilson was but no reply was ever printed, Dr. Buckman's Genealogy 1:25 says
that she was probably a daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Baker) Wilson but that
there is no proof. Quite so, for this is a guess and wrong. Stephen Wilson and
Sarah Baker were married at Falls Monthly Meeting in 6th mo. 1692, recorded
also at Middletown Monthly Meeting: they had a son Stephen born 29 2nd mo.
1695/6 and a daughter Mary born 1 1st mo. 1696/7, and their children are shown
in Mrs. Brey's book, A Quaker Saga, page 415. The Wilsons continued to be
recorded at Middletown until on 5 3rd mo. 1698 we learn that Stephen Wilson had
removed out of the province. Fortunately, we know where he went, merly to
Hopewell Township, then Burlington, now Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where, as
yeoman, he made his will on 26 March 1707, probated 19 May 1708, naming wife
Sarah, minor children Stephen, Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, John, Samuel; executors:
wife and brother-in-law Samuel Baker; John Routledge to assist in educating the
children; witnesses: William Bryant, John Routledge, John Reading. No Buckman
connection appears, and a child of this couple would not have been more than
fifteen years of age when William Buckman's first child by his second wife was
born. At the wedding of Stephen and Sarah (Baker) Wilson, no Elizabeth Wilson
appears, and, of course, at that date Elizabeth Wilson was not to become
Elizabeth Buckman for fourteen years. If Stephen Wilson was the father of
Elizabeth Buckman by an earlier marriage, there is no evidence of it.

Elizabeth (Wilson) Buckman married, second, Thomas Story of Falls Meeting, who
was not the well-known Quaker of the same name. They declared their first
intentions at Middletown on 5 10th mo. 1717 and were advised "to try affections
a little further." "A little further" they again declared their intentions on 6
12th mo. 1717 and second intentions (the first time obviously did not count) on
6 1st mo. 1717/8, and Thomas Story had a certificate from Falls Monthly Meeting
to marry Elizabeth Buckman at Middletown dated 5 12th mo. 1717/8.

Elizabeth (Wilson) (Buckman) Story died 13 March 1732/3.

The account book already mentioned contains the notation, naturally in a
different hand from William's, that he died in Makefield, 9 8th mo. 1716.
According to Middletown Monthly Meeting records, he was buried on 11 8th mo.
1716. His will dated 4 7th mo. 1716, probated 26 Oct. 1716, had as witnesses
Stephen Twining, John Frost and Joseph Scott. It reads as follows:

William Buckman of newtown in the County of Bucks; to eldest
son william Buckman plantation in Newtown purchased from Samuel
Hough and also piece of meadow and woodland by Neshamineh Creek
to the extent of 50 acres, and if William lack heirs of his body
then to son David Buckman or to son Thomas Buckman; to wife
Elizabeth Buckman remainder of lands until son Thomas is aged 21
and one-third part afterwards during life or widowhood. To sons
Thomas Buckman and David Buckman the last mentioned lands from
the time Thomas is 21, he to have to town lot in his share,
subject to the life interest of his mother as stated above; if
either Thomas or David died in their minority, then the survivor
shall have the whole, paying L10 current money of the province
to each of the two daughters Elizabeth Buckman and Rebeckah when
they are 21. To son-in-law Edward Beck five shillings to be paid
12 months after testator's decease; Beck is indebted to
testator about eleven pounds old Currency which debt and also
thirty shillings more current money of the province is to go to
each of the three children of said Edward Beck, Sarah, Franciss
and Edward, to be paid when they are respectively aged 21. To
daughter Mary Strawhen fifty shillings current money to be paid
12 months after testator's decease and to her five children
Ruth, Sarah, William, Henry and John fifty shillings when they
respectively arrive at the age of 21. To daughter Ruth Blaker
fifteen pounds current money to be paid 12 months after testator's
decease. To two youngest daughters Elizabeth and Rebeckah Buckman
fifteen pounds current money each to be paid at age of 21 years.
To three sons William, Thomas and David, all the carpenter toolls
equally divided. To son William Buckman one Cowe called prissy and
her calf. To wife Elizabeth Buckman all rest and residue of
personal estate as long as she remains a widow but if she marry,
then this to the two daughters Elizabeth and Rebeckah one-half
to be equally divided between them. Wife Elizabeth Buckman and
     son William Buckman, joint executors.

Though he signed by mark, the mark is "Will" and he was able to write, as
other documents show.
